Scottie Scheffler’s competitive fire should define his 2026 season

Scottie Scheffler's 2026 season was defined by a relentless competitive drive, culminating in a victory at the TOUR Championship to secure his second FedExCup.

A Defining Trait of Competition

For Scottie Scheffler, the motivation to excel is not rooted in fame or the accumulation of trophies. According to his caddie, Ted Scott, Scheffler’s true character is revealed by an unwavering desire to compete at the highest level in any endeavor, whether that be water volleyball, basketball, Monopoly, or professional  golf.

This competitive fire became the hallmark of Scheffler's 2026 season, a year that the world No. 1 described as a "battle." While the season may not have included a major championship victory, it solidified Scheffler’s reputation as a generational player whose relentless drive persists regardless of the event's prestige or his physical condition.

A Season of Resilience and Routine

Scheffler’s year was marked by a high level of ball-striking compared to Tiger Woods and a putting  game that has become among the most lethal on the PGA TOUR. However, it was his consistency and dedication to his routine that set him apart. Even when playing weeks in a row, Scheffler attacked his schedule with vigor.

A prime example of this commitment occurred after The Open Championship at Royal Birkdale, when most top players returned home for rest. Scheffler instead traveled to the 3M Open in Blaine, Minnesota, to honor a commitment. Despite having nothing to prove, he arrived with a competitive intensity that propelled him to a runner-up finish against Jackson Koivun.

This approach highlights Scheffler's refusal to "take tournaments off," as he views every opportunity to play on the PGA TOUR as a gift that should not be taken for granted.

Overcoming Adversity

The 2026 campaign also showcased Scheffler’s stubbornness in the face of physical challenges. Before the BMW Championship, Scheffler contracted hand, foot and mouth disease, which caused blisters that made gripping a  club painful and swallowing difficult.

Although doctors advised him to withdraw, Scheffler pushed through, firing rounds of 65, 68, and 68 over the final three days to finish in a tie for 12th. Reflecting on this, Scheffler acknowledged that such persistence can be both a strength and a weakness, but it is fundamentally who he is.

Conquering the TOUR Championship

The season reached its climax at the TOUR Championship in Atlanta, where Scheffler entered the final round trailing by three strokes. He fired a 4-under 66—the round of the day—to win by three strokes and secure his second FedExCup.

This victory carried additional significance as it erased any ambiguity from previous titles, where Starting Strokes had sparked debate about who truly held the lowest score. By winning the TOUR Championship, Scheffler became the third player to win multiple FedExCups, joining Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy. At age 30, he also claimed the top spot on the all-time money list.

Looking Back and Looking Forward

Scheffler’s year concluded with him as the runaway world No. 1 and a primary contender for Player of the Year. Throughout the season, his approach remained consistent. Whether competing in the FedEx St. Jude Championship—which he won by an eight-stroke margin—or closing out the final event at East Lake, Scheffler’s focus remained on giving his all in every moment.

As he looks back on his career, Scheffler aims to be able to say he did everything possible to perform at his best. With 22 career wins, all achieved in the last five years, Scheffler has established himself as a player who is not in the game for counting stats, but for the adrenaline of competition. His 2026 season serves as a clear indicator of his mindset: he does not just play; he battles, and he wins.
