Matt Fitzpatrick has strategically switched to a new driver for the Travelers Championship, aiming to turn a weakness into a strength. After experiencing difficulties with his driver during the weekend at the U.S. Open, he made the decision to use a Ping G430 LST this week. Fitzpatrick had struggled with this aspect of his game, finding himself ranked near the bottom for Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee in the final round at Shinnecock Hills.

Strong Opening Round

The change has immediately yielded positive results. Fitzpatrick had an impressive start, missing only one fairway during his opening round, which culminated in a 6-under 64. This performance placed him just one shot behind the early leader, showcasing the effectiveness of his new equipment. Additionally, he ranked eighth in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee for the round.

Overcoming Equipment Challenges

Before making this switch, Fitzpatrick remarked on the challenges of finding a driver that matches his swing and preferences. His previous driver cracked just before the Truist Championship, leading to a struggle in identifying a suitable replacement. He emphasized the complexity of getting fitted for a driver at a high level, stating that  golfers all have unique tendencies and habits that must be catered to.

Evaluating Performance

Despite being highly ranked in various statistics throughout the season, Fitzpatrick’s performance off the tee had been lackluster prior to the switch. He sat 46th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee and 12th in Driving Accuracy leading up to the Travelers Championship. Acknowledging his struggles, he noted the importance of giving oneself opportunities not just for birdies but also for comfortable pars.

Finding Comfort on the Course

Fitzpatrick expressed a sense of relief and increased comfort with the new driver, contributing to his positive outlook after the first round. He noted missed opportunities, having four birdie attempts from inside 20 feet on his last five holes, indicating that he could have performed even better.

Maintaining Momentum

As the tournament progresses, Fitzpatrick aims to maintain this momentum with his new driver. The initial signs are encouraging, and his readiness to adapt could play a crucial role in his performance going forward. His assessment of the equipment and how it aligns with his game highlights the ongoing efforts top players make to refine their tools and improve overall performance.
