A Record-Tying Surge in Detroit
Cameron Young delivered an electrifying performance during the second round of the Rocket Classic at Detroit Golf Club. After birdying seven of his first eight holes, Young found himself in a position to challenge for the lowest score in PGA TOUR history. While he ultimately closed with a 61, a score that matches the Detroit Golf Club record, he acknowledged that he was aiming even higher. Reflecting on his round, Young noted that he was contemplating a 55 during his explosive start.
Despite the remarkable achievement, Young expressed a sense of frustration regarding the round, mentioning he missed numerous birdie opportunities that might have allowed him to challenge the PGA TOUR record of 58 held by Jim Furyk. Young, who recorded a 59 at the Travelers Championship in 2024, described the experience of having ten-foot birdie putts on almost every hole as he navigated his bogey-free round.
Three-Way Tie at the Top
With his 61, Young reached 10 under for the tournament, placing him in a three-way tie at the top of the leaderboard. He shares the lead with Patrick Cantlay and Patrick Fishburn, both of whom carded 66s on Friday. The competition remains tight as the field heads into the weekend, with several notable players positioned just a few strokes back.
Matt Wallace, who posted a 64, and Rickie Fowler, who shot a 68, sit two shots off the lead. Fowler’s day was particularly eventful; he briefly held the lead at 11 under before sliding back. His round featured a three-putt bogey on the 11th hole and a trip to a greenside bunker on the 13th, but he managed to finish strong with a birdie on the 18th. Fowler, who won the 2023 Rocket Classic, expressed optimism about his position heading into the weekend.
Notable Performances and Field Dynamics
Peter Malnati, who set the pace with an opening-round 61, followed up with a 71. He remains in the mix, sitting one stroke back alongside a large group of contenders that includes Xander Schauffele, who carded a 66.
Among the highlights of the second round was a moment of levity and sportsmanship from Matt Kuchar. Kuchar recorded the seventh ace of his career on the 156-yard, par-3 5th hole using a 9-iron. Following the feat, he invited a young spectator inside the ropes to retrieve the ball, which he signed for the boy. Kuchar noted that it was an easy opportunity to make a child's day memorable.
Meanwhile, Hideki Matsuyama (68) reached 5 under to extend his active PGA TOUR cut streak to 30. Tony Finau (67) also reached 5 under, keeping his focus on improving his standing to be among the top 70 in the FedEx Cup rankings following next week’s Wyndham Championship. Finau, the 2022 Rocket Classic champion, noted that he frequently monitors his standings to stay updated on his progress.
Notable Departures
Not all high-profile players found success at Detroit Golf Club. Several notable names failed to make the cut at 3 under. Wyndham Clark, the U.S. Open champion, finished at 5 over with a second-round 74. Chris Gotterup, who had maintained a streak of 14 consecutive cuts made, finished at 1 over. Additionally, Akshay Bhatia, currently ranked No. 12 in the FedExCup standings, missed the cut at 1 under.
As the tournament transitions to weekend play, the leaderboard remains crowded, and the opportunity for further movement is high given the nature of the course, which many players found highly accessible during the first two rounds.
